Eight years ago, Lori and I met at Language Matters II: Reading and Teaching Toni Morrison, an intensive week-long NEH workshop held at Northern Kentucky University. I felt so lucky to have Lori as a roomie. She was extremely good at anticipating the thoughts and feelings of others especially when I was discussing my writing and was stumped with a title. Inspired by a touching Morrison experience, Lori enthusiastically proclaimed, “That’s it! That’s your title Yvonne! Crying Girl!”
Lori’s kindness and thoughtfulness are some of her best attributes and they shine in everything she does. I recall noticing that she wore a comfortable pair of shoes that I’ve never seen before and which everyone knows today as Crocs. Shortly after I arrived home from Kentucky, guess what was delivered to me? Yup, a pair of my very own crocs!
I treasure the rich experience that Lori and I shared together and with other wonderful teacher friends at Northern Kentucky University. From the bottom of my heart, I am thankful that you shared your brilliant book title idea with me and did not keep it to yourself! Lori Ingram Stussie- you are LOVED!
